Introduction
Sculptra in an injectable treatment that activates your skin’s natural power to revitalize collagen production for a more youthful appearance. Sculptra is a unique treatment for its ability to restore facial volume lost due to ageing or illness.
What?
Sculptra® was first approved 1999 in Europe for filling small facial defects and it is currently available in more than 40 countries globally. It consists of Poly- L-Lactic Acid, which is a synthetic polymer that has been used in human body since 1960 and as medical suture material from 1970. It is a powder that is reconstituted with water for injections.
Where?
Sculptra® is used to treat deep lines, creases and folds to give a more youthful appearance. Areas targeted are the temples, cheeks and jawline. It is the treatment of choice for restoring facial volume loss due to diet and exercise. - It’s also used to treat facial fat loss (lipoatrophy) in people living with HIV.
When?
Facial ageing actually begins in your 30s, when skin firmness begins to decrease as a result of both internal (genetics and natural ageing) and external (sun exposure, smoking, stress, etc.) factors. Your body slows up collagen production and by age of 40 there is on average 20% of collagen loss.
How?
PLLA stimulates collagen production by inducing fibroblasts, specialised skin cells. Sculptra is the most powerful way to restore fullness and facial shape. - Collagen molecules are too big to be absorbed as a cream on the dermis and when ingested as a supplement collagen is actually broken down in the digestive system. - If necessary a local anaesthetic cream is applied at the start of the treatment. The number of injections depends on several factors, including your age, how deep your wrinkles are and the type of treatment you desire. As with all injections you will feel some discomfort. It may be that you notice a brief burning sensation at the injection site. An ice pack applied after the treatment will help to calm your skin. - At your first treatment visit, it may appear that Sculptra® worked immediately because of the swelling from the injections. In a few days, when the swelling goes down and the water is absorbed by your body you may look as you did before your treatment. Sculptra® takes time to work, results are gradually noticeable after approximately 6 weeks. An average of 3 treatments are planned for optimal revolumising, spaced 4-6 weeks apart. - The aesthetic improvements obtained with Sculptra® have persisted for up to 3 years in many patients.
Aftercare
You should massage the treated areas of your face in the first few weeks after the treatment, 5 min minutes five times a day. It is important to stay well hydrated for collagen facilitation and avoid facial treatments for a week. The use of a rich HA serum is valuable to retain surface moisture.
Risks
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Sculptra in 2004 for restoration following lipoatrophy for people with HIV. In 2009 the FDA approved it under the brand name Sculptra Aesthetic for the treatment of deep facial wrinkles and folds for people with healthy immune systems. - Injection related side effects at the site of injection such as bleeding, tenderness or pain, redness, bruising, or swelling. These effects generally resolve in 2 - 6 days. - One possible delayed side effect with Sculptra® can be the formation of small nodules under the skin in the treated area. These may not be visible, you may notice them only when you press on the treated skin. These bumps tend to form within 6 to 12 months after the first treatment, respond to gentle massage and eventually resolve. - If you want to appear more youthful-looking — without appearing like you’ve had work done — then chances are Sculptra ® Aesthetic may be a good choice for you.
